INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE WITH SHAPESHIFTER First you need two things, a bootable disk (filedisk, CD, partition or floppy disk) and the MacOS 7.53 installer - this can be downloaded off Apples web site... THE BOOTABLE DISK & PREPARATION 1) If you already have a bootable MacOS disk or CD, then ignore this section. Go onto "DOWNLOADING THE SYSTEM 7.53 IMAGES & INSTALLATION", only if you have MacOS 7.0 and want to upgrade it. It's free & legal! 2) Download the Shapeshifter filedisk from this web site. Both are 2mb (unarchived). 3) You can put the filedisk anywhere on your hard disk. 4) Call up Shapeshifter, and click on the Volume/Disks button. Now select the filedisk from the requestor or type in it's location in the empty field. 5) Look down at the bottom of the Volume/Disks window, and you will see a cycle button that will eventually give you the option (Filedisk1) to boot directly from the filedisk I've supplied. Once this is down, close the window. 6) Assuming you've already have set aside an extra partition or filedisk (100mb+) for installing MacOS, all you need to do now is save these settings. This is located on the main Shapeshifter window, centre button. 7) Now Start the Mac emulation*. Once it has booted-up, MacOS will see the other filedisk or partition you've setup, and will ask you whether to initialise it, press OK. Unfortunately there is no progress bar, and it will take a few minutes to setup the partition/filedisk, so be patient. 8) Next you'll have to transfer the System Folder and Stuffit Expander from the supplied filedisk to the other larger partition or filedisk (100mb+) - note: only the main bootable disk can be mounted onto the Amiga's Workbench screen. Obviously this other volume will have the disk space, so you can copy over the downloaded BIN files, and to expand the BIN/HQX files. [*When you boot from this filedisk, it'll display a warning saying that this System was meant to be for a floppy disk, ignore it, it will boot up fine anyway.] DOWNLOADING THE SYSTEM 7.53 IMAGES & INSTALLATION 1) These SMI (Self Mounting Images) disk images can be found via this search engine on Apple's web pages, at: http://asu.info.apple.com/ 2) Select your prefered language in the pop up menu (this is important). 3) Type in "System 7.5" in the search field, and press Search. 4) The next page will list all relevant downloadable files concerning System 7.5. Near the top of this list will be an entry entitled "System 7.53", click on it. It should display 20 files to download. 5) I recommend downloading the smaller BIN (Macbinary) files. 6) Now you can transfer the BIN files from the Amiga to the Mac side. To do this, load Shapeshifter from WorkBench, and get Mac emulation running. Then press the Control + Tab keys (at the same time) to pause the emulation, and press left Amiga + m, to go back into Workbench. Find and execute the small script called "MAC", this should be located in Shapeshifter's folder. This will mount the Mac Filedisk (with at least 60mb of extra space) onto Workbench. 7) Copy all the BIN files onto the Mac volume. 8) Once this is done, you can now go back into Mac emulation by pressing left Amiga + m keys, and finally Control + Tab keys. 9) Now you need to unarchive the BIN files, by using Stuffit Expander. You're better off expanding the BIN files into a separate folder on your main boot disk, and then trashing those BIN files (put them into the Wastebasket and go to the Special menu, and select Empty Wastebasket). If you're feeling lazy, and you want Stuffit to do all the work for you, then go into Expander's preferences and select the "Destination" and "Watch Folder" options. These will allow you to select two folders in which Stuffit Expander will find archives (the Watch Folder) and expand them automatically into the destination folder. 10)Assuming none of the files were bad, we can proceed to the next phase - running the auto-mounting disk image files. Simply double click on disk image #1 - the one with the 3 charater file extension ".smi", and the only one with an icon. [The self mounting disk image program will now verfy all 20 parts of the System 7.53 image set, once this is done it will mount one disk image onto the Mac's desktop.] 11)All you've got to do now is to open the virtual disk and double click the System installer icon. This will bring up the installer splash screen, license agreement, and finally the easy/custom install screen. 12)Which one should I go for, Custom or Easy install? You may ask. Personnally I'd go for custom install, but that's just me. Either one will result in the same System setup for your Amiga. If you decide to go for a custom installation, then select "System software for this Mac" or something along those lines. Don't forget to select the OTHER partition/filedisk, to install the System onto. Don't install it onto your temporary boot filedisk, it will not have enough space. 13)No more action is required on your part once you've set it going. Once this lengthy installation is complete (takes about 30-40 minutes), all you need to do now, is to Shutdown the Mac emulation. Do this via the Special menu, and select "Shutdown", this will quit out of Mac emulation and Shapeshifter, into Workbench. 14)To use the full installed System, you need to swap your filedisks around, so that Filedisk1 now boots off the new System, or select Device1, in Shapeshifter's Devices & Disks window, to boot off that one instead (depending on which disk type you've used). For other information regarding Shapeshifter, please read the AmigaGuide manual.
