How do I set up Classic so that it will work?

You need to update OS 9 to 9.2.2 first, then go into OS X and click on the Classic system prefs button, to select the Classic System folder. Once selected, any Classic application will automatically launch Classic mode.

I cannot get Classic MacOS to work with earlier versions of Mac OS X after the 10.2 upgrade?

You may get this message; The application ‘Finder’ has unexpectedly quit, if you have MacOS X 10.0 through 10.1.5 to 10.2 with a MacOS 9 System Folder on the same partition/disk.

Note: The System Folder is not affected when used independently of MacOS X.

Do not use MacOS 9 System Folder with OS X 10.1.5 or earlier after it has been updated to 10.2. You may use the following temporary work around to use this System Folder within a MacOS X 10.0 through 10.1.5 Classic environment:
1. Before starting Classic, open the System Folder.
Important: Do not confuse this with the folder named "System".
2. Locate and drag these files, which are located in the top-level of the System Folder, to another folder, or to the desktop; Classic, Classic Support , Classic Support UI.
3. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
4. Choose Classic from the View menu.
5. Click Start.
6. Click OK when prompted to install Classic system resources.

Notes: If you use this System Folder with MacOS X 10.2 in the future, 10.2 will ask to update these Classic system resources again the first time that Classic is started.

You can also avoid this issue by installing a copy of MacOS 9, for each version of Mac OS X that is installed. Each System Folder should be used by only one version of MacOS X.

When I load a specific Classic application, it starts to open, but then unexpectedly quits, how can I get it to load up without this happening?

If a library on which a Classic application depends, is missing from the MacOS 9 System Folder, the application may start to open then unexpectedly quit without displaying an alert box. There are three possible solutions:
1) Reinstall the application. It may also require updating so that it is compatible with OS X, because it is corrupted, or incompatible with the OS.
2) Restart the computer using MacOS 9. When you open the application an alert box with a specific message should appear, which may contain the name of the missing or misplaced file. If you can locate the file, return it to the correct location.
3) As no.2, except that the error message might tell you that a file is corrupt, and needs deleting or replacing with a non-corrupted copy.

Will Classic MacOS programs work in MacOS X?

No they won’t, not directly in X’s environment. Only Cocoa (native X coded programs) or Carbonised (a half way coded application, that will run in both Classic and X) programs will run within MacOS X.

However, you are able to install both MacOS X and MacOS 9.1, or 9.2x onto separate partitions (preferably) and boot-up either one of them at a time to run a specific application (this is called the Classic Environment). This is the only way to run classic MacOS applications. Of course, if you have enough memory (256mb or more) you can run MacOS 9.1/9.2 on top of MacOS X.
